Gorilla is the largest monkey in the world. The wide mouth and the large size make them look aggressive but they are actually quite gentle. Gorillas are a plant-eating animal and live in tropical forests in Africa.

We already know two types of gorillas: the first is western gorillas living in wet forests in the Gabon, Cameroon and parts of Congo. The other is Eastern gorillas, which appear only in a small area in central Africa, in the Virunga Mountains.

Individual gorilla populations live in environments ranging from swamps and lowlands to mountain forests at an altitude of 1600m above sea level (lowland gorilla) and 2200-4200m above sea level (mountain gorillas ).

How to communicate

Gorillas communicate with each other with both voice and facial expressions. They are socially animals and often live in groups. Gorillas spend most of the day eating. As a plant-eating species, their main food is leaves, shoots and sometimes fruit.

After getting up, they walk around the drive to eat leaves or grass. After that, when it is time to rest, they will wander in the forest or find a place to sleep. In the late afternoon, they will start making a nest with suitable branches to stay overnight. The head gorilla, usually the strongest male, will choose to stop. When he ordered the nest, the whole group listened.

Breast clapping

In special cases, gorillas can stand up with their hands clapping their chests. This is both an act of threatening the enemy and a playful gesture between the two gorillas.

Being threatened with extinction

Sadly, gorillas are endangered animals. They were hunted aggressively for feathers and skulls to display.
