Intelligent door closes or opens with light

Scientists at the University of California (U.S.) have developed a smart curtain that can move in response to light , allowing it to close in the dark and open in the morning.

First, the team coated several layers of carbon nanotubes onto a polycarbonate film to create a material that could move in the light.

According to lead researcher Ali Javey, an associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of California, in a matter of seconds, nanotubes absorb light, convert it into heat and push it onto the surface. of polycarbonate film. When exposed to heat, the plastic film expands, while the nanoparticles remain the same, causing the material to bend.

Associate Professor Javey said the advantages of the new material are that it is easy to manufacture and very sensitive to low-light. 'A flash of light is enough to create a reaction. We envision future intelligent and energy-saving buildings, in which curtains made of new materials can be automatically closed or open during the day , "he said.

In addition, other potential applications of the new technology include light-driven engines and robots that move in the direction of light or away from light.
