Internet services of the past
Twenty years ago, dial-up, Yahoo, Google or online games . were tied to Internet users in Vietnam.
Network Dial-up
The "tít-tè" dial is a feature of Dial-up network, Internet connection technology uses the phone line itself. Connecting at a very slow speed of only 56 Kb per second, Dial-up network is considered expensive when it costs several tens of thousands of dong per hour. The famous services of that day could include VNN 1260, 1268 or 1269. Later, Internet connection was upgraded to ADSL network, coaxial cable technology and then to fiber optic cable in recent years.
IRC chat
IRC is a form of Internet communication that allows people in a group to talk to each other. This primitive chat form penetrated Vietnam in 1997 through Vietchat or FPT mIRC. Of course, due to dial-up networking, the cost of chatting on that day is quite expensive.
This is considered an indispensable software on the 2000s. Yahoo! Messenger boomed at the same time ADSL network became popular in Vietnam, used almost by all Internet users. Referring to Yahoo, many people will recall their "glorious" time with "malicious" nick, Buzz sounds or the exciting feeling of "online" getting dozens of messages each time. The higher speed network also allows all Yahoo users to share videos via webcam.
Yahoo! 360
Instead of today's Facebook and Twitter social networks . Internet users in Vietnam used the Yahoo blog platform. This is like the "home" of the owner, the place to share feelings, emotional "entries" or comments from people . Before the development of a new social network, Yahoo! 360 has had a few changes but not enough to help this service compete. This blogging platform is officially "dead" in 2013.
Google services
Other than Yahoo's fate, many of Google's services still "live" during the Vietnamese years of using the Internet. Google Search, Gmail email service is still used today and increasingly plays an important role for users.
Listen to music online
Hoangclub.go.to, Sonhai.info or Nhacso.net . are the first online music sites in Vietnam. The interface is somewhat colorful but with that time, the music quality is quite low to ensure the speed of "loading" or inserting ads into the song . but Internet users were still welcome and happy with these services.
Online game
In the 2000s, the quality of the Internet was good, the price was cheap, so online games could penetrate Vietnam. The popular games of a time can include Vo Lam Truyen Ky, MU (with different suppliers), Gunbound . later Audition, Boom . At that time, Internet shops "sprouted like Mushrooms "and most parents prohibit their children from accessing these services.
Video viewing service
As a Google service, YouTube becomes a video sharing channel associated with Vietnamese Internet usage. In the 2000s, another service, Clip.vn, was also a place where many members visited to watch videos. However, before the competition, Clip.vn gradually becomes weaker compared to YouTube.
The forums
The online forum is one of the early Internet-based playgrounds that spends a lot of time. Memorable names like TTVNOL, truongton.net, later VOZ Forum, Vn-Zoom, DTTH or Webtretho . attracted hundreds of thousands of participants. The forum at that time was commented by some veteran users as "quality" now. In addition, the trend of websites or social networks also makes the forum no longer "as cool" as before.
