Alaric died shortly after the sacking of Rome. So far, this place of burial is still a mystery. Many believe that a river flowing through Cosenza in southern Italy is where he rests. Alaric's soldiers temporarily changed the direction of the river, burying him along with much of the wealth in a stone tomb, then letting the water flow again.

Italian scientists and Cosenza authorities identified five locations that could be the burial place for the Alaric king . They plan to use unmanned helicopters, ground-penetrating radars, infrared technology and electromagnetic devices to search for graves containing treasures that can lie 8 meters deep underground.

"This is a real quest. You have heard the legend of a long-lost treasure. Even Heinrich Himmler, a ruling Nazi guard, came here in 1937 in a search effort. If it really exists, it will be worth about $ 1.2 billion, " Francesco Sisci, project coordinator, shared with The Telegraph.

Mario Occhiuto, the mayor of Cosenza fully supported the project."Thanks to modern technology, for the first time, we have the opportunity to conduct a systematic study of the Alaric king's treasure. Troy remains just a legend until it was discovered in the 1870s. Pompeii was also found in the 18th century. We are really determined. This may be the biggest treasure in human history and part of the world heritage , " Occhiuto said.
