Laptops with encrypted hard drives will ship later this year

ASI Computer Technologies will become the first computer company in the world to market a laptop with encrypted hard drive, Seagate Technology said.

This type of hard drive is manufactured by Seagates, incorporating a special encryption chip. Anyone can't read the data, can't even boot the computer without the permission of the computer owner.

ASI is not a big name on the laptop village, but it is still selected by Seagate to "pilot release". As expected, the first batch of laptops equipped with new technology will ship after a few months.

After ASI, some of the larger, more reputable PC vendors will continue to introduce models using encrypted hard drives since the end of the year.

In recent times, laptop theft containing sensitive information has increased in number, causing businesses and government agencies to lose millions of dollars. The prestige of these organizations is also seriously affected, leaving sensitive information of millions of people in the hands of criminals.

To cope with this situation, many states in the United States have asked businesses to encrypt data stored on computers. " I can't help but think that encrypted hard drives will soon become the norm ," said Dave Reinsel, an expert with research firm IDC.

Seagate's DriveTrust technology is different from current security solutions, which often use firewall protection around the computer network and install encryption software on the system.

Meanwhile, Seagate technology is embedded directly inside the hard drive - "data storage warehouse". It requires users to have a key, ie a password, to be able to access the hard drive or boot the computer. Without a password, the hard drive will become useless.
