Large asteroids fly over the Earth in the Fall

JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) of the US Aerospace Agency (NASA) on May 2, said a large asteroid will fly over the Earth in the coming Fall at close range, and will enable scientists to take a close look at this cosmic rock.

" On November 8, the 2005 Asteroid YU55 will fly over Earth and our planet is about 325,000 km at the closest point ," said Don Yeomans, Director of Earth Near Program at JPL in Pasadena. , Los Angeles (USA) said.

This asteroid is about 400 meters wide, the largest known cosmic rock to reach Earth at such a close distance until 2028.

Regardless of the relatively close distance and large size, the " YU55 is not at risk of colliding with the Earth for at least 100 years ," Yeomans said in a press release.

According to him, when the distance is closest to Earth, the gravity effect of YU55 on Earth will be so small that it cannot be measured. It will not affect the tide or anything else.

YU55 was discovered in 2005 and in April 2010, Mike Nolan and his colleagues at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico obtained some fuzzy images of this asteroid when it was about 2.3 million from Earth. kilometer.
