A large ice bridge was formed on the Perito Moreno glacier in the Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina completely collapsed on March 11, AFP reported. This is a rare natural phenomenon that occurs only every few years.
The original bridge was an ice dam formed at the top of the Perito Moreno glacier, interrupting the flow of water around it. The water gradually eroded and flowed through the dam to form a large ice bridge. The ice continues to break and fall when the pressure of the flow increases, causing the ice bridge to thin and eventually collapse completely. This phenomenon was recorded once in 2012 and another time in March 2016.
Perito Moreno is one of the most beautiful glaciers in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina and was on the list of 7 world natural wonders. Los Glaciares National Park surrounding the glacier was also recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage in 1981.
