Large-scale drought in South Central

Drought and saline intrusion are becoming a concern in many provinces in the South Central region. Although at the beginning of the dry season, there are signs that this year, drought will be severe in the South Central provinces. The return of El Nino phenomenon has been a reality, many solutions to cope with drought are being posed in many localities.

To save rice, farmers have to work hard, twice a day to dredge ponds, slap water into the field. In the field of Tho Lam village, Hoa Hiep Nam commune, Dong Hoa district, Phu Yen province, many upstream farmers find water to irrigate rice. The small amount of water that is not saline is a source of water for many fields.

Hoa Hiep Nam Agricultural Cooperative 1, half of the area in an 80-hectare field has been salty. If taking into account the downstream area of Ban Thach river, Phu Yen province, the area of rice affected by salinity is huge.

The meteorological and hydrological station in the South Central region has just released worrying statistics: the average water flow in the river in the South Central provinces has been lower than the average of many years from 6-29 m3 / year. S. Meanwhile, the water level elevation in the reservoirs is not satisfactory. Drought entails saline intrusion. Extensive saline intrusion is very likely to occur when the river flow is insufficient compared to the average of many years. As in Binh Dinh missing to 50-65%, Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen lost 20-25%. The problem here is that the solution against saline intrusion must be done synchronously for each downstream river.
