Laser transmission technology
A Washington, DC-based company is developing a state-of-the-art wireless technology that enables laser power transmission.
This unique technology can replace traditional power lines to power homes, Reuters reported on Dec. 12.
Lasermotive scientists and engineers are currently using lasers to power the model aircraft.
Thanks to laser transmission technology, this model aircraft flies
more than 12 hours on a 5-minute rechargeable battery .
Lasermotive's advanced technology allows ordinary light to be transformed into light, firing it into the air and converting it into electricity.
Tom Nugent, co-founder of Lasermotive, says the company's current focus is on finding a way to charge the ground for unmanned aerial vehicles.
'A laser beam can hold the unmanned aerial vehicle for as long as you like. This is very important, as there are cases where unmanned aerial vehicles need to fly as long as possible , "Nugent said.
Lasermotive also made a model plane fly for more than 12 hours with only a 5-minute rechargeable battery.
Lasermotive is working with Lockheed Martin, a leading US defense company, to develop a wireless transmission method for the Stalker unmanned aerial vehicle.
However, Lasermotive also aims to transfer electricity in space.
"Talking about the real long-term goal, we want to go further, such as transmitting electricity from Earth to satellites ," Nugent said.
With recent advances in the commercialization of laser technology, Nugent says many applications for wireless transmission are becoming more practical.
