Manufacture of laboratory robots using Lego

University faculty Michelle Oyen is responsible for leading the research team looking for ways to make bone in the laboratory for use in medical implant.

The process of bone is done by dipping the screw into calcium and protein solution, washing with water, then dipping it with phosphate and protein solution, repeated several times in cycles. If done in a conventional way, a graduate student will do the tedious work for several hours until the final product becomes available.

PhD student Daniel Strange overcame the problem by making two robots embedded with LEGO Mindstorms from pieces. Of course, Mindstorms is not just the LEGO we played often, according to Strange - he used the NXT-G programming language and accessories to create it. The product is a combination of sensor, servo motor, Bluetooth connection. Two robots will replace the work of the doctoral student and can perform bone-building for hours without rest, ensuring quality as well as performance.
