Many matches in Euro 2016 are made by virtual reality cameras

However, users will not experience the game using virtual reality technology. UEFA wants to test broadcasts of matches on a special YouTube channel.

UEFA has decided to invest in a dozen high-tech cameras to record games in 360-degree video format. Euro 2016 - opening on June 10 in France - will be the first major tournament to be filmed using virtual reality technology.

England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland matches will be given preference. Virtual reality technology was first tested by UEFA in the last two Champions League semi-finals.

A series of virtual reality recorders will be placed inside the stadium during the Euro 2016 event. Some will be located in the tunnel, dressing room and press room.

Nokia was selected as the partner to provide virtual reality cameras for UEFA with each OZO worth £ 42,000. OZO is equipped with 8 lenses and 8 microphones to shoot 360-degree movies. Nokia says its technology will take viewers " into a world of virtual reality."

Unfortunately, the current technology is not advanced enough so that fans can enjoy the VR experience right in their living room. Instead, UEFA considers releasing a special YouTube channel to showcase these new footage.

"The goal of UEFA is to one day fans can watch games with virtual reality technology, and they will experience the same game as in the stadium," said Bernard Ross, UEFA TV's director. This test is just the first step towards that goal. "

Recently, Nokia also signed a contract with Disney to provide OZO to Hollywood studios. Disney used this device to film a promotional video for the Jungle Book.

In a related move, Sky Sports is seeking to broadcast virtual reality footage from a player's perspective.
