Measurement of alcohol by laser technology
Polish scientists have successfully researched a device that uses a laser beam in a car to detect whether a driver is drunk or not.
Details of this equipment are mentioned in the report of the scientists at the Military Technical University of Warsaw, Poland. It can detect alcohol within vehicles by emitting laser beams and special mirrors.
The device works by projecting a laser beam through the glass . This light beam will then turn back on, passing a mirror and into a detector. This will tell the user about the driver's blood alcohol level. The report found that in tests using a breath simulator the driver could detect a low alcohol content of 0.1%. But for real people, scientists think it can detect even lower levels of alcohol.
However, many people do not trust this machine and believe that the results can be changed by many factors such as many people drinking alcohol in the car, windows to open or air conditioning is on. This device can not afford to detect all drunk drivers because the US National Transportation Safety Board says "drunk" is having a blood alcohol concentration of 0.5% or higher. Still, researchers are confident that their products will increase the number of cars tested and their effectiveness in driving off drinkers.
