US scientists have discovered a way to prolong life with a drug that protects telomeres - DNA fragments that are thought to play an important role in aging.

Scientists say that aging occurs because telomeres in our genes are shortened over time. In this latest study, scientists have discovered a way to slow down the aging process. In theory, this can help extend our life.

The Daily Mail reported that the team was led by Dr. Bill Andrews, founder of biotech company Sierra Sciences in Nevada, US. Dr. Bill Andrews is also the first to discover the presence of telomerase, an enzyme that helps slow down the aging process.

' Stimulating cells that produce telomerase will be an effective method to prevent aging. Our drugs can create this effect, but we need to make sure they're safe for humans before being used , 'said Dr. Andrews.

New treatments are currently not safe for humans. Therefore, the team could first test dogs and cats because of less stringent regulations. The pet drug market has grown strongly in the past few years as more and more people are concerned about their pet health.
