Myanmar established the world's largest tiger reserve

Scientists hope that with the establishment of this world's largest reserve and an active conservation effort, tiger populations will recover.

Stretching 17,477 km2, this newly expanded tiger sanctuary will cover approximately the Republic of Kuwait (Kuwait) - a country in the Middle East (17,818 km2) and larger than the state of Connecticut, northeastern United States ( 14,371 km2).

After years of illegal hunting and prey decline, the number of tigers left in the Hukaung reserve is less than 50, however, experts hope with active conservation, ' Tiger ' population can be recovered. Although the tiger is the 'star' of the reserve, it is also the 'home' of more than 360 species of birds.

Besides the 'endangered' tigers in the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Hukaung valley area is also home to many threatened animals. Other threats, among them are Indochina leopards Panthera pardus delacouri (Nearly threatened - Near Threatened, NT), leopard or rattan newspaper Neofelis nebulosa (Vulnerable - Vulnerable, VU), Malay Helarctos malayanus (bear) VU), Black Himalayan bears Ursus thibetanus (VU), Rusa unicolor deer (VU), Gaur Bos gaurus (VU), Asian elephants Elephas maximus (Endangered - Endangered, EN) and hung neck antler Aceros nipalensis of the pink family Critically Endangered - Critically Endangered, CR).

'I dreamed of the Hukaung tiger sanctuary being expanded like this for many years , ' said biologist Alan Rabinowitz in a press release.Mr. Rabinowitz is the head of the Cat Conservation (Panthera) team, and the leader of the first biological expedition into the Hukaung valley in 1997. During this expedition, he discovered a mammal. Newly, it is leaf deer (leaf deer, scientific name Muntiacus putaoensis) - the first small deer in the world with a height of about 60 - 80 cm and reaches a weight of about 11 kg.

'The establishment of the Hukaung Valley tiger sanctuary in 2004 was a breakthrough. But to protect this entire valley to make sure the tigers can live and wander the pleasures are considered a great challenge. Now I am very happy that the people and the government of Myanmar have understood the importance of tiger conservation , 'Mr. Rabinowitz said.

Hukaung Valley is home to Indochinese tigers or Corbett (Panthera tigris corbetti) tigers - one of 6 surviving tiger subspecies (3 other tiger subspecies extinct in the 20th century). The tiger was slaughtered to remove body parts for traditional Chinese medicine, loss of habitat, decline in prey and conflict between humans and tigers for causes that caused the population to decline. .Today, only about 3,000-5,000 individuals are still living in the wild. And the ideal habitat for the world's largest cat has fallen 41% in the last decade.

Below is a picture of nine different tiger subspecies, three of which are extinct and possibly the remaining subspecies will become extinct in the near future (?) If governments do not have timely preventive measures. (Photo: The Sun ).
