Mysterious island like a black hole appears on Google Maps

A Reddit user discovered an unusual 'black hole' on Google Maps located in the northeast of New Zealand, in the Republic of Kiribati.

According to Business Insider, a Reddit account called Kokoblocks pointed to an area that looks like an island in the middle of the ocean, blacked out on Google Maps. It is easy for viewers to think of a 'black hole' when viewed from above.

'What the hell, this looks like an island,' Kokoblocks wrote on the Google Maps subreddit.

This photo quickly attracted the attention of the Reddit user community. Some people speculate that the island could be a secret military base and blacked out by Google to avoid information leaks.

'It looks like it was censored for some reason,' the KorvisKhan account said.

According to Live Science magazine, Google often blurs 'sensitive' areas like military bases or prison yards at the request of each government. The company does this to avoid revealing information about their location and structure.

In addition, there are several theories surrounding the black spot in the center of the area in the image. 'Assuming it's not a crater, it's more likely an underground volcano that has caused the blackness. Most likely it is magmatic (born igneous rock)', the account The_Professor64 wrote.

Besides, many users have taken this opportunity to come up with their imaginative theories. Some have suggested that this could be the famous island that appeared in the ABC sci-fi series 'Lost' .

However, most were disappointed to learn that this mysterious place on Google Maps is Vostok Island . It is located in the northeast of New Zealand and is in the Republic of Kiribati, a small island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. The island nation currently consists of 33 archipelagos and coral reefs.

"The black patches you see are actually very dark green, it's a dense forest made up of Pisonia trees (a genus of plants in the four-hour flower family)," user SatisatisAny20 said.
