The lake is about a hectare and is 18 meters deep, in the middle of the arid desert of Tunisia's Gafsa region. Like the mysteries surrounding the appearance of the crater in Siberia, the exact cause of this lake is still unclear.

The lake is said to appear several months ago. Small earthquakes may have affected a natural groundwater, causing water to spill onto the surface. However, the aquifer below has not been discovered yet.

According to Independent, locals began pulling to the lake a month ago, considering it a place to rest and avoid heat between the hot weather and the average temperature of about 40 degrees Celsius. Every day there are about 600 people. Go to the lake to swim, snorkel or water.

However, local officials warn that the water in the lake is starting to change from blue to dark green and algae appears. This suggests that it may contain carcinogens. Some experts believe that lake water may also be radioactive, due to the impact of a nearby phosphate mine.
