Hundreds of spherical rock formations exist in Costa Rica and no one knows what the ancients created them for.
Mysterious stone balls in Costa Rica
The stone blocks in Costa Rica are called by the locals Las Bolas . They are the subject of research by John Hoopes, a scientist at the University of Kansas, USA. He wanted to evaluate their importance to suggest that UNESCO recognize them as world heritage .
Archaeologists discovered rockballs for the first time in the late 19th century. Some fruits were made from about 600 years. These rocks are still very difficult to estimate age. Archaeologists date their ages through the age of the ceramic samples and the age of carbon radioactivity , related to the sediment found in excavated areas.
The chronology of rocks is even more complicated when spherical rock areas are found to have the appearance of cultural objects of different ages. Moreover, most spherical stones are no longer in the original position.
The size of the stones varies, with a diameter of several centimeters to more than 2.5 meters. The largest tablet has a volume of more than 14 tons.
Costa Rica has about 300 stone balls. Most of them are made from a volcanic rock called gabbro and have a nearly perfect round shape. They are polished during the impact, rubbing against smaller stones. The old Costa Rican did not have a written language, so there was no record of any stone ball left behind.
Many stone balls are still waiting to be excavated by humans.
Some tablets are engraved with various shapes.
Although many scientists have studied stone balls, no one has yet known what ancient people used them for. Many spheres are found arranged in straight lines, curves as well as in triangles or parallelograms. A group of four other spheres is facing north, so it is suspected that they are arranged by acquaintances using the compass or astronomical.
Due to the civilization that created the stone ball disappeared after the invasion of the Spanish in the 16th century, their role will forever be a mystery and that secret will be protected by UNESCO.
