Many people believe that the image bears the image of a giant wild panda, because it was excavated in one of the only three places in China that used to be the natural habitat of this species.

However, that is only a guess. Its true shape and meaning is still unknown.

At this excavation site, archaeologists also found a large number of other artifacts. They concluded that this may be part of the temple since the beginning of Chengdu. It coincides with the time when the giant stone statue was created.

Chengdu is the only Chinese city to retain its name for a long time. It used to be the religious and trading center of the people in the province for at least 4,000 years.
