The children were buried together with sacrifices, including a dog

The mysterious ancient tomb has the purpose of ritual - researchers say - and around the children are religious objects including a sacrificial dog to 'be friends'.

Researcher Alejandra Jasso Pena said they also discovered porcelain flute pipes, bowls and incense sticks.

Experts predict that this place is an important ritual center of the Tepanec tribe from 1200 to 1300.

The influential merchants living here were called Pochteca.

Last year, archaeologists also discovered an Aztec ceremonial area used to burn snakes under Mexico City's famous Templo Mayor ruins.

The above discovery rekindled the hope of finding the tomb of the Emperor to be near there.

Templo Mayor is an area of 2 large pyramids and many smaller buildings that contain the spirit of the Aztec empire.

However, no Aztec tombs were found and researchers are working on a five-year program to find a royal tomb in the Templo Mayor area.
