A 8.8cm long slot appeared on the heat barrier on the stomach of the shuttle Endeavor. A detached sponge from the outside fuel tank hit the shuttle as soon as it left the launch pad last week.
Engineers are trying to determine if the damage can withstand air friction when the shuttle flies into the Earth's atmosphere when it returns. They are currently conducting experiments on similarly damaged samples.
A similar incident in 2003 led to the shuttle Columbia being destroyed when it flew into the Earth's atmosphere.
Endeavor astronauts plan to make two more space walks on Wednesdays and Fridays, maybe they will have to repair the hole in the abdomen.
