In addition, NASA plans to bring the spacecraft into orbit around the Lagrange L2 point , which is at an altitude of 60,000km above the dark part of the moon. The spaceship expected to be used by NASA for this mission is Orion . Orion will have its first flight in 2014 and will fly around the moon in 2017 without crew, if everything goes according to plan.

The mission of the first crew to join Orion will begin in 2021. However, until now, no specific funding has been made by NASA for this program. The reason for bringing Orion to L2 is to communicate with the management team on Earth.

To reach L2 point, Orion must go 15% further than Apollo mission. Astronauts will have to spend 2 weeks on the other side of the moon. The purpose of this mission is to test the Lunar Cataclysm hypothesis - the moon and the Earth were "bombarded" about 4 billion years ago. Another goal is to determine the age of the Aitken Basin impact crater.
