Netherlands: Successfully implanted 3D skull for a woman

A 22-year-old Dutch woman suffers from a disease that causes her skull to thicken and squeeze her brain. Fortunately, she became the first person in the world to replace a new skull.

Doctors at the Utrecht hospital in the Netherlands conducted a skull replacement surgery for the patient in 23 hours.

Surgeon Bon Verweij said the patient had a 5cm thick skull, which forced his brain to pinch, affecting his vision and coordination of activities. Other brain functions are also threatened, which can jeopardize the patient's life.

The doctor Bon Verweij and his team conducted an implant surgery for a newly designed skull with a 3D printer.

"This not only has cosmetic benefits but also makes brain functions work better than the old method," Dr. Bon Verweij said.

This is the first time a complete skull has been replaced. The surgery took place three months ago but on March 25, the new Utracht hospital revealed information.

Now this woman has seen and started to return to work. People hardly see any signs of surgery, Dr. Bon Verweij announced.
