New discovery about ice on the moon

Scientists claim to have discovered new evidence that the largest hole in the southernmost moon may contain a large amount of ice.

The main pit mentioned is Shackleton, named after Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton, 19km wide and 3km deep, equivalent to the depths of the Earth's oceans.

The inner part of the pits at the polar regions of the Moon is almost submerged in permanent darkness, turning them into freezing traps.

Therefore, experts have long hypothesized that they may be "tape".

However, the previous observations of humans about these holes have produced many conflicting results. For example, the Japanese Kaguya cruise ship could not find ice inside the Shackleton pit, but the LCROSS spacecraft of the US Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) while analyzing the hole Cabeus at the southernmost found ice inside .

Now, thanks to the moon research moon Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, experts first discovered a significant amount of ice in the Shackleton pit.

'Water ice with a mass of up to 22% inside the Shackleton pit is possible' , according to Space.com quoted team leader Maria Zuber of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA).
