Does the Moon have its own moon? And you will be surprised with its name!
What is the moon of the Moon? Hint: It is a name "extremely cute".
Stars - like the Sun - have planets around. The planets have orbiting satellites - like the Earth's Moon.
So the question is whether the moon also has a satellite revolving around itself? And if so, what would science call it?
The name "cute nut me" for "moon of the moon"
In an unpublished study from arXiv, astronomer Juna Kollmeier from the Carnegie Institute of Science (USA) and Sean Raymond from Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Bordeaux (France) laboratory named the moon's moon "submoon" - roughly translated as "sub-moon".
Does the moon have a moon around?
But know what? Submoon is a new name, and science used to use a different name . a lot more cute. It is moonmoon.
You can translate it into "moon of the moon" , or better "moon moon" . But in this article, use "moonmoon" to feel that science is sometimes "cute" .
Does moonmoon exist?
Return to the study of Kollmeier and Raymond. Here, they ran a simulation algorithm to see if the so-called "moonmoon" really existed. Because at least in the Solar System, we have not found any such satellite.
Kollmeier said the reason for not finding moonmoon could be because the search scope must be really small and accurate. A moonmoon must be close enough to be influenced by the gravity of the moon itself, but not too close to avoid collision.
The Moon of the Moon is also called moonmoon.
In other words, there must be a space between the moon and the planet, so that moonmoon avoids the planet's gravity.
In the solar system, only 4 moons are able to achieve this requirement. It is the Earth's Moon, Jupiter's Callisto Moon, and Satus and Iapetus of Saturn. But all 4 have no moonmoon exists.
Research also raises a very important issue. If that is the case, how does moonmoon get into that convenient position?
"There must be an impact force large enough from a moonstone, but it must fly at a sufficient speed to have orbit around the moon itself, not the planet and the star" - Raymond shared.
This process requires a delicate balance of gravity, because every change will make that relationship disappear. Like the Moon of the Earth, it is "drifting" away from our planet. So our Moon will not be able to have a moonmoon satellite revolving around it.
For Earth, moonmoon if true also exists only in the short term. But if a moon achieves gravitational stability, located at a sufficient distance from the host planet, it is entirely possible that it contains moonmoon.
Stable areas of moonmoon on some of the planet's solar systems.
At the same time, astronomer Michele Bannister from Queens University said: "We can certainly not have any moonmoon around Jupiter and Saturn."
For the scope of searching outside the solar system, it is possible that moonmoon is in existence. But finding an alien planet (exoplanet) was difficult, finding it even harder. So, to find a "moonmoon" , the ratio is almost zero.
However, it is important to know that this research has not undergone the evaluation process yet. It only serves as a basis for determining the existence of moonmoon, while helping science to gain an understanding of the history of the planets and satellites in the universe.
"Although many planet-moon systems do not have the capacity to accommodate an extra moon, the absence also brings a lot of facts, giving us a better understanding of the mechanism and history of the formation of the inner sphere" - quoted in research report.
"Future research will be needed on the possibility of actually having a full moon, as well as how to confirm them."
