New Wi-Fi record set at a distance of 304km
Ubiquiti Networks, a company specializing in wireless broadband equipment, has joined hands with an amateur radio organization in Italy to set a new world record for the 5GHz Wi-Fi connection.
This connection can receive data from an "unprecedented" distance of 304 km, from Sardinia to Central Italy directly with data receiving rate of about 5 Mbps.
Ubiquiti used a 17dBi antenna and a 35dBi pan antenna, clocked at 5GHz in Sardinia. The other 35dBi pan antenna is located atop Monte Amiata - 1740 meters above sea level.
The entire connection uses the high-end mini-PCI radio module XtremeRange5 manufactured by the company.
" Connecting this data has crossed the sea, surpassing a long record, " Ubiquiti said.
" The arrangement of two 35dBi dish antennas aligned at a distance of 304 km is an extremely complex stage, requiring thorough research and engineering to every detail.
However, XtremeRange5 allowed us to do that without any additional equipment. Thanks to that, we save a lot of time, cost and human resources. "
Ubiquiti says it wants to continue to expand the project to people using radio in the region. " Our goal is to build a wide-band digital network to connect all radio users in Italy to each other and with other services such as Echolink, ATV or Dstar ."
