Northern light illuminates the UK

The Borealis aurora, also known as the Northern Light, has created a magnificent scenery rare in many parts of the United Kingdom, from Scotland north to Essex and Gloucestershire south.

Light is also clearly seen in Orkney, Norfolk and southern Wales.

This colorful expression is generated by solar wind-charged particles interacting with the Earth's atmosphere, creating great scenes such as the Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire War Memorial above.

Mark Thompson, the live host of BBC Stargazing, said he could not think that aurora could be so beautiful in Wick's sky in Caithness County.

The aurora forms when the solar wind blows charged particles from the Sun to Earth."They take 2-3 days to arrive, and when they arrive they make gas atoms glow in the sky."

"3-4 days ago, the Sun emitted a lot of energy, and that energy source has reached Earth. Whether or not aurora depends on whether the Sun is active or not . "

"It is very lucky. The last time I saw this wonderful scene must have been 20 years ago ," Thompson said.
