Oil pollution: disturbance of living activities in the ecosystem

Pollution of oil and oil spills even if the concentration of oil in water is only 0.1mg / l can cause death of plankton; greatly affects young offspring and larvae of benthic organisms .

This is the judgment of experts at the Conference: "Assessing the impact of oil pollution on marine and coastal ecosystems and assessing economic losses" by the Department of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Recently organized school in Hanoi.

Experts say that the concentration of oil in water reaches 0.1mg / l can cause plankton death; greatly affects young and larvae of benthic organisms; The oil adhering to the body or the organism absorbed through water filtration reduces the use value.

For seabirds, oil wetting feathers, losing the protection of body temperature and the function of floating on the water. Infected with oil, birds move hard, have to move, even die. Oil also affects the ability of bird eggs to hatch.

Fish - the biggest resource of the sea is assessed as a species that is strongly affected by the oil spill incident: The oil pollutes the environment causing fish to die in series due to lack of dissolved oxygen in the water; oil adhering to fish reduces the use value due to unpleasant odors; Oil can cause eggs to lose their ability to grow, eggs can become cancerous, rotten.

Oil pollution also alters oxygen balance, causing potential toxicity in the ecosystem (HST), hindering economic activity in coastal areas.

Dr. Do Cong Thung, Institute of Marine Environment and Resources (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said, scientific research on '' Assessing the impact of oil incidents on Vietnam's marine ecosystems in over the last time '' the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources will give an overview of the situation of oil spill in Vietnam's waters; assess the loss of resources and resources of marine ecosystems.

In particular, in the near future, the impact of oil incidents will be assessed to typical ecosystems such as: ecosystem of sea sand (Da Nang, Nha Trang, Vung Tau), tidal area (Ben Tre), mangrove forest (Ca Mau) , lagoon (Tam Giang - Cau Hai and Thi Nai lagoon), sea grass (Cua Dai - Quang Nam), coral reefs (Cu Lao Cham - Quang Nam), islands (Bach Long Vy - Hai Phong); Since then, offer solutions to handle and overcome.

Specialized research methods such as marine chemistry, marine biology, marine geology, GIS, marine physics are also used to create synergy for research.
