Online animal encyclopedia
Founded in 2007, it is an ambitious effort to create an Encyclopedia of Life (EoL) encyclopedia online, free of charge, in the style of Wikipedia Encyclopedia, to describe it all. The species are known in the world.
So far, EoL has achieved an important milestone when updating 750,000 species of organisms, ie more than one third of the 1.9 million species known to humans. Jennifer Preece, a scientist at the University of Maryland (USA), said EoL is a tool to help citizen scientists research online. There are many websites dedicated to specific groups such as insects, birds, animals . while EoL attempts to gather that knowledge together. At present, EoL uses documents from 180 partners, collects their website images, videos, scientific information, especially 35 million pages of scanned documents from the Library of biodiversity diversity.
When registering as a EoL member, users are entitled to create their own virtual collections but are of research significance, for example: North American invasive insects, endangered birds in Ecuador . But EoL's CEO said that it is a reverse microscope that helps users gather information for large-scale analysis.
At present, the extended version of EoL develops knowledge in a larger scope such as medicine, biotechnology, ecology . At present, EoL has reached the figure of 1 million pages and is still waiting for new content from partners, members and online users.
