Planting forests on ... desert

Scientists are planning to implement an ambitious plan - planting artificial forests in the desert.

The project, called Sahara Forest, will grow trees in a 10,000 square meter open greenhouse built in the desert in Qatar. This work will use surface water and groundwater pumped from the depths of 200m from the surface, to irrigate plants, vegetables and algae on the surface.

Irrigation system has the same mechanism of operation as camel nose. When the camel breathes out moisture, its nose immediately absorbs moisture and condenses into water. The camel nose is also capable of condensing moist air in the evening to keep them from losing much water.

Solar pumps will pump water throughout the giant glass structure. Meanwhile, a system will cool and condense the steam rising from the surface when the air in the desert heats up. The condensed steam helps the greenhouse to maintain the ideal temperature for plants to grow, and is used to irrigate the plants.

Currently, the project is in preparation time and will start its operation in July. Tourists can visit the desert man-made forest during the 18th UN Climate Change Summit (COP-18) in Doha in November 2012.
