Precious blue diamonds are created from ancient oceans

According to a correspondent in Rome, two scientists, Evan Smith, American, of the American Academy of Pearls (GIA) and Fabrizio Nestola, the Italian, of the University of Padua, Italy, recently discovered a mechanism to form diamonds. precious green. This work was published on the cover page of Nature magazine.

Blue diamonds like Hope are famous for being dyed by ancient oceans through an element in water that is 410 to more than 660 km deep, thanks to the movement of geological layers. These diamonds are also evidence of an Earth's crust mechanism.

According to researcher Smith, blue diamonds are of very high value, so it is difficult to obtain them for research purposes. In addition, it is rare to find mineral impurities that exist in diamonds. These minerals are in rocks where diamonds are formed and contain important information about how they are born. To determine the impurities in 46 diamonds used to study, and calculate the depth to which they were formed, the researchers had to resort to an X-ray material analyzer.

The analysis of minerals trapped in blue diamonds originating from Africa, India, South America and Borneo has shown that diamonds are formed inside large rocks when in contact with the diamonds. Extreme pressure and temperature conditions, such as a depth of 410 to over 660km. That means they are formed at the boundary between the upper and lower mantle layers, which belong to the middle part of the Earth's crust and core. Most other diamonds are formed at a depth of only about 150-200km.

According to the theory of researchers, boron of ancient oceans is incorporated into serpentinite rocks . These rocks will then be brought down further due to the motion of the tectonic plates and will free all of the water in it.

Much of this water will return to the Earth's surface, but a small part is trapped in other minerals and continues to be brought to greater depths. At a certain depth, they release boron and other elements.

If these elements have enough carbon, the element that forms on diamonds, boron will replace some carbon atoms and create blue diamonds.

Therefore, blue diamonds play an important role in understanding how the Earth has changed over time and is another proof of the formation of the earth's crust. The study also shows that water-rich minerals are present at a much greater depth than previously known and also suggest that water can be recreated deep in the Earth's heart.
