"Rhinos can give birth on any day in the next two or three months , " said Bill Konstant, an IRF conservationist and caring for Ratu, speaking.

This is the third time Ratu has conceived, but it has been broken in two previous times. Its gestation period has lasted 16 months. So experts believe it will give birth this time.

Sumatra rhinos are one of the most threatened species. Their number in the wild environment has decreased by 50% in the last 20 years due to hunting and narrowing of habitat. Conservationists say the number of rhinos in nature is less than 200. Most Sumatra rhino populations live in isolated areas in Southeast Asia.

Three cases of Sumatra rhino born in a captive environment over the last 100 years took place in the Cincinnati Zoo, Ohio State, USA. A male rhino born in captivity in 2001, named Andalas, was taken to Indonesia to mate with Ratu.
