Reveal the true size of giant sea monsters
A new study finds that when describing marine organisms, popular culture makes people think that these animals are bigger than their actual size.
For a long time, the scientific world has not helped solve these misunderstandings, because until now, it is still very difficult to accurately measure many of the world's most massive sea monsters. However, a group of researchers is currently trying to provide a valid answer by analyzing the body size of 25 marine species, including whales, sharks, leatherback turtles and giant clams.

"Many years ago, I saw many people constantly saying that giant squid can grow to 18 meters in length. When I began to study the data, I found that conjecture completely unrealistic. " Craig McClain, deputy director of the National Center for National Evolution, said.
The giant squid discovered has a maximum body length of just under 12 meters, not 18 meters as many reports.(Photo: Daily Mail)
Actual measurements reveal, giant squid actually only reaches a maximum size of nearly 12 meters and this level is rarely achieved.
Professor McClain and his colleagues have studied famous "horrible" animals such as white sharks, giant octopus, walrus, as well as many lesser-known creatures such as giant worms and squid. The goal is to find accurate dimension measurements for the largest marine animals in each classification group and use that information to build formulas to help researchers estimate total length and weight. of many other species.

In one example, the team discovered that an Australian trumpet snail was thought to be about 0.9 meters long, but their exact measurements were only 0.72 meters. Meanwhile, some reports of the size of whale sharks indicate the length of this animal is 22 meters, but in fact, the maximum length of this creature is likely only approximately 20 meters.
According to experts, understanding the magnitude and vibrancy within a species is important for finding ways to protect these animals and their habitats.
