Developed by a team of robotics engineers who worked at Carnegie Mellon University in the US before founding a startup called Shift Robotics , Moonwalker may look like roller skates, but it is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms that help the wearer walk normally without any controls.

You can walk with them the way you would walk with regular shoes or sneakers, allowing the motorized wheels to create a spring in your step. Powered by a state-of-the-art brushless DC motor, this ingenious design is actually a platform that can be attached to a variety of footwear to dramatically increase your walking speed up to 7mph/11kph.

For comparison, the average human walking speed ranges from 2.5 to 4 miles per hour. The feeling of walking in the world's fastest shoes has been compared to the feeling of walking on a "moving walkway" in an airport.

" Moonwalker is not a skate . You don't skate on it, you walk on it. You don't have to learn how to use it. It learns from you," said Xunjie Zang, founder and CEO of Shift Robotics.

The strap-on design allows the Moonwalker to be worn with almost any shoe. It has eight polyurethane wheels, just like roller skates. However, these wheels are much smaller and do not line up in a straight line. They are powered by a 300-watt electric motor.

Using sensors, the AI monitors how the wearer walks and the algorithm automatically adjusts the motor power to sync with the speed, allowing for speed to increase and decrease as the user walks faster or slower.

According to Shift Robotics, the Moonwalker is the world's fastest walking shoe , which can increase the wearer's walking speed by 250% based on analysis that the average walking speed of a person is 4 - 6.4 km/h.

It is also designed to climb stairs and go up and down slopes through a special foot movement that activates the wheel lock mode and prevents the wheels from rolling freely.

With a battery range of nearly 10km, the Moonwalker can be an alternative to personal vehicles such as cars and motorbikes for short trips. Its compact size allows you to easily store it under your desk or even in your backpack.

Shift Robotics is trying to bring its smart shoe to consumers through a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, hoping to raise $90,000. The company began pre-sales of the Moonwalker this week, with a retail price of $1,399 per pair and an expected delivery date of March 2023.
