Russia built the first floating nuclear power plant
Russia's Arkhangelsk governor Nikolai Kiselyov said yesterday that the world's first floating nuclear power plant will go into operation in 2011 at a port in the Arctic Ocean.
Mr. Kiselyov added: 'The construction of such a first nuclear power plant with a capacity of 70 MW started this year and was completed in 2010. The plant will operate at the port of Severodvinsk in the Arkhangelsk region from in 2011. This floating factory is a completely new product in the global market. '
(Photo: Barentsobserver) Russia began construction on the factory in Severodvinsk in the Arctic Ocean since April 2007 and is expected to build six similar floating nuclear plants within the next decade. In it, the second factory will be built on Russky Island in the territory of Primorye, in the Russian Far East, in 2011.
Earlier, a Russian official said that 20 countries were interested in buying floating nuclear power plant technology. The above plants will be mainly exploited in remote areas where electricity is in short supply. It is also applied to projects that have continuous electricity demand but do not have on-site power grids.
The value of building the first floating nuclear power plant in Arkhangelsk is about 10 billion rubles (US $ 400 million). But then the cost can be reduced to 6 billion rubles (equivalent to 240 million USD).
