Russia moves huge ice sheets, larger than icebergs that sink Titanic

Russian oil company Rosneft used icebreakers to transport an iceberg of more than 1 million tons.

According to Sputnik, the iceberg is the largest and heaviest iceberg ever moved by Russia, twice as heavy as the ice piercing and sinking the Titanic on the fateful night April 15, 1912. The direction of the iceberg was moved to prevent it from colliding with an oil rig.

Experts used sound amplifiers to determine the size and mass of icebergs on and under water, then were removed by several icebreakers and auxiliary vessels with cables and trawl nets.

Moving icebergs is a way to protect marine infrastructure, such as oil rigs on the Arctic continental shelf, from colliding with ice sheets.

Meanwhile, according to the portal Arabian Business, the United Arab Emirates's National Advisory Agency (UAE) has announced plans to move icebergs from Antarctica to the coast of the country. . This is part of a plan to discharge freshwater into the Arabian Sea to restore ecological balance, reduce seawater salinity and restore biodiversity.

However, experts warn that this could cause significant climate change in the area because cold air spilling from an iceberg will cause year-round storms.

The Antarctic ice sheet is the largest ice mass on Earth with 10,000 billion tons of snow and ice, containing most of the world's freshwater.
