Scientists puzzled by mysterious 'golden egg' found at the bottom of the deep sea, unclear what this object is
According to researchers, in the context that two-thirds of life forms in the deep oceans are not fully understood by humans, this latest discovery could mark an exciting new discovery.
Researchers are puzzled by a mysterious yellow object that was recently discovered on the seabed off the coast of Alaska.
Accordingly, this object was found at a depth of 3.2km during an expedition that lasted from August 23 to September 16 led by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This entire exploration mission was broadcast live on the Internet.
According to NOAAA, the shiny object that was found is very fragile to the touch, similar to human skin tissue. While experts are not sure exactly what the object is, they think it could be an eggshell or the remains of a sponge.
The mysterious object is yellow in color, with a soft, thin outer shell like skin tissue.
Instead of leaving it where it was, the NOAA probe deployed a remote-controlled robotic arm to gently tap the object and separate it from the rock.
It was then brought to the surface, where laboratory DNA testing is expected to reveal more about its nature. Experts have yet to determine what caused the hole in the front of the "golden egg" , although it may have been the result of a collision with another sea creature.
'Something was trying to get in… or trying to get out,' a researcher said during a live broadcast of the discovery of the object, which has a small hole at the top.
'When our understanding cannot determine what it is, it is a strange thing. What kind of animal can create such an eggshell? ', another member of the team added.
An object believed to be the egg of a mysterious creature is being examined in a laboratory.
With two-thirds of life in the deep ocean still unknown to scientists, this latest discovery could mark an exciting new discovery. Kerry Howell, professor of deep-sea ecology at Plymouth University in the UK, agreed that the object was 'very strange'.
"In 20 years of deep-sea exploration, I have never seen anything like this. There are so many undiscovered species in the deep sea that this object could easily be related to a new species ," she said.
Professor Howell also said the opening on the object could be where the creature inhaled and exhaled if it was a sponge, or where the creature hatched if it was the shell of an egg.
Murray Roberts, a professor of marine biology at the University of Edinburgh, agrees with NOAA scientists that it could be an egg. Some species, including vulnerable deep-sea fish such as sharks and rays, lay their eggs on seamounts or in cold-water coral habitats. This creature could have broken the egg shell and swam away.
It is known that the photo of the egg after being posted on Twitter attracted a lot of speculation from internet users.
