The sign on the gate of the city of Candido Godoi, state of Rio Grande do Sul has the words 'city of gardens and twins'. More than 80% of the 6,700 people here are descendants of the Germans. They came from World War I for many reasons such as climate appeal, fertile land sold for cheap prices and the Brazilian government's incentive policy for immigrants.

Unusually high rates of twins in Candido Godoi began to gain attention in the 1990s. During 1990-1994, the number of twins in Linha São Pedro district alone accounted for 10% of the local population, while the proportion This is the state of Rio Grande do Sul of 1.8%. Soon the research and film crews from all over came to Candido Godoi. Linha São Pedro district is home to the highest density of twins in the world.

Most twins live in Linha São Pedro district and have a common surname, Grimm. Although they live in a relatively isolated place from the outside world, they still use many motorized devices in agricultural activities and people speak in German.

Genetic experts have yet to give a convincing explanation about 38 twins in about 80 families living in an area of nearly 4 square kilometers of the county. This secret has existed for decades, attracted the attention of the international community and is the subject of many books and scientific research.

Local people feel that they do not need to rush to find the nature of the secret. Now, they spend most of their time posing for reporters to take photos and promote the image of 'twins' capitals around the world.

Meanwhile, some scientists believe that Josef Mengele, who was dubbed 'Nazi death' under Nazi Germany, has a certain role in this strange phenomenon. Josef Mengele conducted many scary tests on the twins at Auschwitz concentration camp to create the superior Aryan race under Hitler's orders.

Mangele's test participants often lose their lives, become disabled or carry illness in humans. Many local people recall that it was this death doctor who hid in the city under the guise of a veterinarian in the 1960s, when the birth rate here began to skyrocket. He died in 1979.

In a book published last year, Jorge Camarasa, an Argentinian journalist, said Josef Mangele conducted many tests for women here to create twins with blond hair and pale eyes. According to the local people, Mengele has prepared very elaborately and used many drugs to conduct those tests.

But all of these hypothetical proponents cannot prove that the death doctor had conducted a scientific experiment in Candido Godoi during the time of hiding. According to historian Paulo Sauthier, the manager of a museum in Candido Godoi, the role of 'death doctor' is rumored to sell books because Josef Mangele studies only twins in Germany.
