Smos transferred the first data it collected back to Earth in the last days of November 2009. Smos will create the world's first map of the continental humidity and the amount of salt dissolved in the ocean.
The collected data will be widely used in the hope of improving weather forecasting and warning of possible disasters such as floods, earthquakes .
Talking to the BBC, Dr. Yann Kerr, the leader of the research team, said: "Smos works perfectly as a dream. Everything has been done synchronously and exactly as expected, the scientists themselves. I did not expect the image to be sent so soon. "
Although the first images were sent from the unspecified device when the ship entered orbit, but through image quality, the scientists completely believed in the accuracy of the recording device.
The Smos program consumed Europe at $ 465 million and lasted for at least three years.
