According to Son La Provincial FPD, in the limestone forests of 3 communes of Ngoc Chien, Hua La and Nam Pa, Muong La district (Son La) there are 12 black gibbon groups with the number of 46 individuals, in which 6 groups have numbers from 20 to 26 individuals (in 2 communes of Nam Pa and Hua La).
This is a rare gibbon that needs a project to protect and develop herd. However, some local people who are not aware of wildlife protection have sought to hunt down and trap these gibbon groups.
In the past, in the Northwest forests, especially the rocky mountains along the Da river, there were hundreds of monkeys, gibbons, local people called gibbon with black hair color as " stage ni ". Because there is no management and protection of wild animals, the number of gibbon groups has gradually disappeared, many of the habitable gibbon caves are now empty.
