Son male paint rests on parents

Like some young men, western painters stay with their parents as they mature. But if their parents are not rich, they don't have abundant food, they will leave.

In California, western nightingale birds live in stable families when boys stay home through the winter. Girls often separated in the late summer and were replaced by other migrant girls.

" Researchers all know that females are separate from their parents to reduce the likelihood of near-mating ," said Janis Dickinson, a biologist at Cornell University in the US. But the researchers don't know why sometimes painting males stay at home over the winter and sometimes they leave.

The main dish of nightingale in winter is mistletoe. Each household holds plots with lots of mistletoe. The pair of faithful birds and use a piece of land year after year.

In California, it was only in October the mistletoe could eat, then the adult female birds left the nest at the end of the summer. The male birds will estimate their parents' wealth and decide whether to stay before winter comes.

By eliminating the number of mistletoe in the late summer, scientists can determine the male bird's decision. Three summers ago, they removed half of the range at half of the test area.

Compared to other areas, areas with reduced send range have a lower number of male birds, whereas there is no difference in female bird's dwelling or walking.

Couples of affluent parents - living in misty areas - have five times more boys staying at home than parents whose sentiments are reduced.

" Our experiments show that family stability is related to the stability of the food source ," Dickinson said.

With the nightingale, reducing the amount of food does not cause their parents to leave their residence. They still stay where they live, living enough with less food because the children have left the nest.
