Sonneratia trees reduce natural disasters and help people increase their incomes
The Sonneratia caseolaris grown on the dike line of Trieu Phuoc commune in Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province not only becomes a 'green belt' to break the wave but also creates additional income for the people.
Trieu Phuoc is a low-lying commune close to Cua Viet estuary, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province. In previous years, almost every year, people in Trieu Phuoc commune also met many natural disasters such as storms, tornadoes, saline intrusion, sea encroachment . ' At that time, the land was heavily salty so No trees, no live animals. People just cling to some of the rice fields to fight hunger through the day , 'said Tran Ba Dung, a resident of Trieu Phuoc commune.
Sonneratia
In the past 2 years, Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee has issued Decision No. 107 on July 23, 2010 and Decision No. 1297 dated July 5, 2011 on planting wave break trees at Trieu Phuoc dyke line. This is considered one of solutions to prevent and mitigate natural disasters, contributing to improving the environment and environment. Besides, the program also contributes to creating jobs and improving incomes for beneficiaries.
Up to this point, the project of planting wave break trees in Bac Phuoc dyke line has planted new Sonneratia trees with a length of more than 4km, an area of 17ha, with a density of 1,600 trees / ha.'Since the program of planting mangrove Sonneratia, many species of fish, shrimp, crabs have come to live under the Sonneratia tree. Along with that, there are many species of birds residing as cranes, storks, cauldron . ', said Nguyen Van Thuan, head of Ha La village.
And Mr. Tran Van Giap, the owner of a farm exploiting seafood at the dike line of Trieu Phuoc commune also said excitedly.'I decided to come here to bid for seafood exploitation every year. In addition to bidding money, there is no additional cost. For every kg of brackish water crabs, the price ranges from 400-800 thousand VND depending on the type of crab. Every year my family net profit from 40-50 million '.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Chairman of People's Committee of Trieu Phuoc Commune, the project of planting Sonneratia caseolaris, creating ecological diversity as well as minimizing climate change initially gave positive results. Therefore, the commune will proceed to plant this kind of tree throughout the coastal area in the coming years.
The model of planting wave break trees at Trieu Phuoc sea dike is also the first model of mangrove planting in Quang Tri province.
