This animal is listed in the Vietnam Red Book as at risk of extinction. The reason for this situation, because so far scientists have only found them in the streams of Tam Dao mountain range and distributed in a narrow range of the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Tuyen Quang and Thai Original.

Because it is a strange amphibian (with its tail when it has grown up), the toad fish are hunted and sold by tourists by the foot of Tam Dao mountain to tourists for ornamental breeding, or soaking alcohol for medicine so gradually depleted. Besides, due to indiscriminate exploitation of forest and massive tourism development, the habitat of this species has been declining and not developing.

Currently, scientists are conducting to put farmed baby toad fish in semi-natural environment in the streams and lakes in Tam Dao mountain, helping toad fish adapt gradually to natural habitat conditions.
