The 1 million seed is put into the bank

Reuters reported that the number of units preserved in the Millennium Seed Bank of the UK has reached one million. The first million object introduced into the bank is the Oxytenanthera abyssinica bamboo seed of Africa, brought from Mali.

The Millennium Seed Bank is a unit of British botanical gardens. It is located 50 km south of London. It is expected that by the end of this decade the bank's collection will account for 10% of the species of the earth flora from 126 countries around the world.

By 2020, when financed, bank leaders are ready to include a quarter of the collection of all species.

The seeds are stored in a state of drying at temperature - 20 degrees Celsius. They are kept in glass jars, and they are placed in a storage area of ​​nearly 1,000 square meters underground at a depth of 5 meters.

It is intended that these seeds will be used in the case of plant varieties whose seeds have been stored in an extinct bank. A similar bank in Shpisbergen under construction will accommodate the storage of all agricultural crops on the earth.
