Artist Luke Jerram used glass to sculpt the pattern of viruses and other deadly pathogens. These are works of art from the "Glass Microbiology" collection performed by Jerram since 2004.
Viruses or types of pathogens are often described as ugly, scary blobs like stalking monsters waiting for an opportunity to attack people. Because the size is too small, viruses are only seen under a high magnification microscope. The virus seems invisible and has no color or shape to the human eye.
For Jerram, the virus is a kind of artwork. He chose glass materials and chose the world's deadliest viruses, exaggerating millions of times to make beautiful transparent artworks. His design has been thoroughly tested by virologists before being sent to a professional glass blower to ensure the absolute accuracy of the final work.
