The culprit causing throat cancer should be avoided

ranks first among head and neck cancers in general. The disease has a good prognosis if detected early, treated properly and promptly. The disease can be found in all ages but most at age 40-60. People in southern China, countries in Southeast Asia are at high risk.

According to Professor Mai Trong Khoa, former deputy director of Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi), the cause of throat cancer has not been clearly defined. However, there are many assumptions.

1. The first is virus . Many studies show that the disease is related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) . This anti-virus antibody test is high in some types of non-differentiated nasopharyngeal cancer.
2. The second is the genetic factor . Many cases of throat cancer are found in the same family.
3. The third is the environment . Chinese immigrants to the United States are less likely to have throat cancer than in the country. Therefore, people think of the role of the environment affecting disease. Injury to T lymphocyte function accompanied by chronic EBV infection are two identified high-risk factors.
4. The fourth is food and processing . Food processed through many stages of fermentation such as wine, beer, salted fish, pickled pickles, fish sauce containing many nitrosamines are related to some types of cancer including throat cancer.
5. Fifth is age and gender . The disease can occur at any age, but the most common is the period 40-60. The disease occurs in both sexes but in men more.

Therefore, to prevent disease, Professor Khoa advised to limit the consumption of fermented foods, proper nutrition, eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Patients need ENT examination when the symptoms of nasal congestion, tinnitus, floating lymph nodes on one side increase gradually to be detected early. Especially in families with parents and siblings with throat cancer need regular health checkups.
