The first Vietnamese received the Cosmos International Award

On November 4, in Osaka, Japan, Honorary Professor Phan Nguyen Hong of Hanoi National University became the first Vietnamese to receive the Cosmos International Award.

Professor Hong has surpassed 131 candidates from 25 countries selected by the International Cosmos Committee for the 16th year of 2008. In addition to the merit and medal, he also received a reward of 40 million yen. (equivalent to US $ 400,000).

Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Nguyen Phu Binh affirmed that receiving the Cosmos Prize is not only an honor of Professor Phan Nguyen Hong but also a common honor of the Vietnamese scientific community.

After receiving the award, Professor Phan Nguyen Hong said that his research results are collective effort with active support from the State of Vietnam, international organizations, contributions of many scientists. domestically and internationally; especially people living in coastal areas.

He also wishes to continue to contribute his efforts to the restoration of coastal forests, contributing to the protection of marine resources and poverty reduction. Professor will extract a part of the prize value to support scientific research activities for staff and students.

Professor Phan Nguyen Hong, 73, is a pioneer in research activities to restore and conserve mangrove forests in South Vietnam. Through more than 50 years of research, he has made significant contributions to restoring mangrove forests and is now a leading researcher on mangrove ecosystems in Asia.
