The ghost town near Chernobyl
A small city with nearly 50,000 people was abandoned after the Chernobyl disaster and stayed in ruin for over a quarter of a century.
A room sprawled with items left at the Soviet Cultural Palace in the city of Pripyat, not far from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the north of Ukraine. On April 26, 1986, the explosion at the Chernobyl plant led to radioactive leaks and led to the worst nuclear disaster in human history.
Pripyat hotel reception area in the city with the same name. About 50,000 people in this city were evacuated within two days after the disaster.
A Ukrainian government official is observing the abandoned city from the Pripyat hotel. Nearly 26 years after the disaster, the city is still abandoned.
A boxing ring at the Soviet Cultural Palace. This set was taken by British amateur photographer Micheal Day. The 29-year-old man, who was a controller who did not stay in London, often worked in Aberdeen, Scotland. Day visits the city of Pripyat with an escort of the Ukrainian government.
This photo shows an abandoned lecture hall in the Soviet Cultural Palace. Carrying items in and out of Pripyat is prohibited, due to concerns about the risk of radioactive dispersal. However, some graffiti artists still find their way into this place. "There are signs of animals, such as birds or foxes," amateur photographer Day said.
"It's like this city stopped in 1986," Day said. "It is like a living museum. The forgotten years of this city make plants grow a lot. Pripyat is now in the middle of a forest." In the picture is the area once once the main square of the city.
A concrete monument with the word "Pripyat". "After finishing the tour of Pripyat, guests will be scanned for radiation absorption," Day continued. "If radiation exceeds safety, your items will be confiscated and they will give you chemical baths."
An abandoned gymnasium, with a layer of snow covered lightly on the ground.
If you do not know this is a picture taken in the city of Pripyat, it is hard to imagine this light snow-covered amusement park in the Chernobyl disaster area.
