The giant lion once wandered across Europe

Ancient lions of oversized sizes roared throughout England, Europe and North America 13,000 years ago, according to a new discovery by scientists at Oxford University.

The remains of this giant cat discovered earlier were thought to be a species of leopard or tiger. But after analyzing DNA, experts classified them as lions. They are 25% larger than lions living in Africa today and have longer legs to hunt. This lion lives in icy areas with other exotic animals such as mammoth elephants, sword tigers, hairy rhinos and giant deer.

The Oxford University team analyzed fossil DNA and other remains found in the region stretching from Germany to Siberia and from Alaska to the state of Wyoming. Researcher Ross Barnett said: "These ancient lions are oversized versions of today's lions with long legs for the hunting of the road. Genetic evidence for see an ancient lion species extinct with lions today have a close relationship ".

Lions used to play an important role in the life of the ancient people because the image of this animal appeared in many primitive caves, such as the Chauvet cave complex in France. Archaeological findings in Germany with half-and-half lion images also led to the lion hypothesis that was once worshiped by the ancient people.

According to the expert group, the remains found in the Pleistocene (1.8 million to 10,000 years ago) can be divided into two groups, the American Lions living in North America and the Cave Lions living in Northern Europe, Russia, Alaska and Canada's Yukon region.

The cause of mass extinction of large ancient animals is unknown, including giant lions, about 13,000 years ago. Professor Ross Barnett said that this is one of the great scientific mysteries that has not yet been discovered by humans."There are a few different points of view. Maybe because of climate change or something related to people," he said.
