Lake Pitch

The Pitch is located in southwestern Trinidad, Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is a very special lake. This is the largest and most important tar lake in the world, about 41ha wide and 76m deep.

This lake is so called because of the largest natural asphalt reservoir in the world. If you look closely, you can also see the image of plastic slowly floating on the lake surface, creating a unique landscape. Lake tar is formed thousands of years ago by the process of subduction, when oil deep underground floats to the surface and is stored in a crater.

Over the years, the light elements of oil evaporate, leaving the lake as heavy asphalt, eventually forming the landscape today. Every year, up to 20,000 tourists visit the lake of tar. Some people also believe that a large amount of sulfur in lake water is useful for healing.
