Sican culture flourished around 800-1300, which is one of the few metal-making societies. Later it was extinguished by droughts and invasions. The new findings will help scientists better understand this culture.

"It is a religious city, a place of sacred reign of mystical cemeteries , " Izumi Shimada at jSouthern Illinois University, USA, said. "This shows that Sican is a very organized society . "

The burial area is located in the northern coast of Peru, near the town of Ferrenafe. It contains at least 20 graves. Among the findings were 12 tumi knives - ceremonial decorations made of gold, silver, and copper compounds, with pottery, masks, chest masks.

Buried in a 30-meter pyramid, archaeologists also found the skeleton of an over 20-year-old woman, surrounded by figurines of Sican figures, pottery and bronze objects and gold.

A skeleton of a position is found in a sitting posture, accompanied by a metal crown, a thorny oyster and a ceramic jar.

Tumi knives are a precious discovery, because until now scientists have only known tumi through grave robbers. The discovery of these knives in the grave will help them better understand the role of tumi in Sican culture.

One of the tumi has a symbolic image of Naylamp, the founder of the Sican culture that, according to legend, emerged from the sea and turned into a god.

The Sican people are known for their ability to produce valuable gold, silver and copper in that period. They trade shells and gems with other societies that are now Ecuador, Chile and Colombia. Sican culture was weakened when Peru's most powerful culture was the Inca rising around 1200.
